Next time you are going to class you might want to pay attention where you walk. Make sure you aren’t marching over any graves because the myth is true, there is someone buried on campus. John Milton Gregory is buried between Altgeld Hall and the Henry Administration Building. Gregory served as the first president of the University from 1867-1880 and before he died on Oct. 19, 1898, he expressed his wishes to be buried on the campus that he loved.
Gregory was buried in a brick vault resting 10 feet below the ground. A bronze tablet nestled between the trees marks his gravesite. His gravestone reads, “If you seek his monument look about you.”
The location of the site was chosen because Gregory walked by this spot everyday on his way home. So keep your eyes out for any ghostly activity on the quad, especially around Halloween.
