Slavoj Zizek calls Nagisa Oshima’s In the Realm of the Senses an icon of “the passion of the real.” It is an explicit retelling of the story of Sada Abe, a Japanese prostitute who, in 1936, strangled her lover to death, cut off his genitals and carried them with her until caught by police. Oshima’s erotic film, censored in several countries, is grotesque and violent. Like its heroine, it goes to extremes to realize itself. Rated R for explicit content.
