As summer creeps right around the corner, more people are looking for ways to be more active and hopefully tone up for those coveted beach bods. The perfect way to catch a head start is by checking out Urbana Park District’s Free Fitness Week, from May 4 to May 8. Exercise classes are held at the Phillips Recreation Center, Brookens Gym or Urbana Indoor Aquatic Center.

“We hold Free Fitness Week three times a year at the end of each season,” said Kevin Koontz, fitness and aquatics coordinator. “It’s a way to say thanks to all our participants and gives a chance for new people to check out what they like.

So whether you’re just looking for a way to stay active or for more hardcore training, Free Fitness Week has a class for everyone. There are several water aerobics classes of varying difficulties held at the Urbana Indoor Aquatic Center. Fitness classes are held at Brookens Gym and the Phillips Recreation Center. Activities range from full body workouts, personal training and core exercises, to kickboxing and yoga classes. There are sessions from morning to evening to accommodate most people’s schedules.

“One of the most popular classes is a boot camp at Brookens gym in Urbana,” Koontz said. “We have a mind, body, fusion class in the evening and strength and conditioning classes — one in the morning and one in the evening,” he said.

Free Fitness Week has been held for over the past five years, with plenty of participants each year.

“Last season we had over 3,500 visits. Some classes are pretty big, and others small depending on the activity,” said Koontz.

So whether you’re trying to shape up for summer or just relieve some stress from impending finals, take some time to try out a fitness class or two. There’s nothing to lose, and it’ll definitely do some good.
