The bars on campus operate on a variety of levels, depending on the kind of experience the nighttime reveler has in mind. Dens of chaos and mosh pits like KAM’S and the Red Lion stand in stark contrast to the quiet, almost restaurant-level vibe of Legends. For a sit-down bar experience on campus that’s the closest you’ll get to downtown bars like the Blind Pig and Mike ‘N’ Molly’s, and for a choice that’s laid-back but still got enough energy to give your night out some momentum, Murphy’s is your establishment of choice.
Featuring a diverse selection of drinks on tap: bar manager Rob Pinto lists the selection as 25 draft beers, seven types of whiskey and various microbrews sourced from the same marketplace as the Blind Pig. Combining great drinks with arcade games and a basement pool table, this bar is perfect for a night out when you just want to catch up with friends over a few decent brews without being jostled on a sticky dance floor or screaming yourself hoarse over the music.
The staff at Murphy’s has a range of opinions as to why the student body keeps coming back.
“I think they’re drawn to the authenticity of the place and the tradition,” general manager Ryan Block said.
Bartender Kim Boi added, “It’s obvious that the bar staff and everybody that works here is really enjoying themselves, and that enthusiasm spreads through to everyone else.”
In addition to excellent drink specials, Murphy’s also boasts a menu of pub food items that will nestle nicely in your belly along with its hearty ales. One favorite of the menu are the Irish nachos, a sizeable plate of waffle fries adorned with cheese, bacon bits and sundry other delectable nacho toppings that hits the spot perfectly after a pitcher of amber lager.
Murphy’s started serving CU in 1969, and the interior boasts its age. Over the years, patrons have scratched their names into the wooden paneling and tables throughout the bar, and Murphy’s lets these stand as a testament to how long it’s been running. This ability of any patron to leave their mark on the establishment only adds to the bar’s timeless aura.
