buzz’s second annual Sound of C.U. begins tonight and features performances by local acts Kenna Mae, ZXO, and Penny Horses. Here are a few reasons why you should come out and listen to these very talented local artists.
Sound of CU is boasting some major talent with this year’s lineup. Take local folkie, Kenna Mae for example, her voice is as velvety to the ears as her lyrics are thoughtful. Not to mention, she can cover a song with the best of them—seriously, if you haven’t heard her Paul Kotheimer cover on the recent CU covers CU release, you’re missing out. Opening tonight’s kickoff show, Kenna Mae is sure to set the tone for a memorable Sound of CU. – Elias Tracy
R&B act ZXO are newcomers on the scene, their first show being just last month. There’s just a collection of Soundcloud cuts and a track on the Heirship compilation to draw from right now, but their syrupy jams and singer Ryan Bewer’s airy voice make for an intimate, ethereal combination that’s sure to be great live. – Justin Kamp
Penny Horses bring their signature swamp rock/folk rock style to this year’s Sound of C.U kickoff. With a full band featuring acoustic guitars, a banjo and a harmonica, Penny Horses offer Champaign-Urbana a taste of the South with songs like “Meth Head Mary.” Penny Horses will no doubt give a soulful performance at tonight’s Sound of C.U Kickoff, so if you haven’t been able to catch them live yet, now’s your chance. – Christine Pallon
