A college town really isn’t a college town without a staple record store. Luckily for U of I students, a new store See You CD & Vinyl just had its grand opening in Urbana in early October.
“It can still be in a college town,” owner Jesse Grubbs said. “That’s where record stores really thrive.”
The music selection that See You boasts is quite impressive, making it easy to see why the store was voted as the best new business in the Champaign-Urbana area. It’s a small store, but the size has no effect on the amount of music supplied. The modest area of the shop also makes the music selection seem more personal. Just from walking around the store for a few minutes, customers get to choose from a wide variety of genres, CDs, vinyl records and cassette tapes. Customers can also order turntables through the store, but that they are not readily available, because choosing a turntable is more of a “personal decision,” as Grubbs puts it. However, Grubbs says he is more than happy to give advice and to help music lovers pick out the perfect turntable for their needs.
Although locals might not recognize the name, they would recognize the store area.
See You CD & Vinyl is at the same location that housed the most recent Error Records location. Grubbs was an employee for Error Records, and when he heard owner Nathan Landolt was leaving, he knew he had to jump at the chance to take over.
“I went home, and it just kept nagging me about taking over the space,” Grubbs said. “It came from being in the right place at the right time.”
Owning a record store has always been a dream for Grubbs, and he’s happy to be able to share this passion with the Champaign-Urbana community.
“Growing up, going to record stores was always a bonding time for me and my dad. I love being able to provide that experience,” Grubbs said. “If you can think of a better way to make money than listening to music and talking to others about it, I’d love to know.”
