Founded in Portland, Oregon, The Original Pancake House has been gracing the country with fluffy, sticky-sweet delights since 1953. They have since expanded to over one hundred locations nationwide, and we count our lucky stars that one of those is our very own Champaign, Illinois.
The pancake selection of OPH simply can’t be beat, which is undoubtedly one of the reasons it took home the 2016 Best Breakfast of C-U title. Runners-up were Sam’s Cafe and LePeep, respectively.
Basically, Original Pancake House is the “Bubba Gump” of pancakes: banana pancakes, bacon pancakes, blueberry pancakes, buckwheat pancakes. Whatever your heart desires, they’re bound to have it.
But it doesn’t stop at pancakes. Few restaurants can truly master both sweet and savory, but OPH manages to do it, and irresistibly so. I am notorious for consistently ordering the absolute worst item on the menu, but I never have to worry about that here. The omelets are so fluffy you’ll consider ordering an extra to replace your pillow at night (you know, if eggs weren’t perishable).
Specialties feature the Apple Pancakes and Dutch Baby, both oven-baked to perfection. The Apple Pancakes, smothered in fresh granny smith apples and cinnamon glaze, are like something your grandma would make if she weren’t so busy making pies all the time. As for the Dutch Baby, you all know the phrase, “That baby is so cute I could just eat it up!” Well, this one you can. And you’ll love it almost as much as a real baby. These items may take just a little longer to arrive at your table, but they’re well worth the wait.
Plus, With Fighting Illini Basketball season upon us, rumor has it that even Coach Groce enjoys spending a Saturday morning at OPH every now and then. So even if you don’t trust me or the public vote of Champaign-Urbana, surely you can put your trust in Coach Groce.
So, if you’ve been searching for the perfect breakfast spot, look no further. Champaign-Urbana has spoken, and it’s The Original Pancake House.
