If you’re looking for places in the C-U area that offer delicious, homemade comfort food, we’ve got one for you. And it’s closer than you think.

The Bread Company is a family-owned restaurant that offers authentic Swiss and European dishes, which are made from a variety of fresh meats, pastas, breads, cheeses and vegetables. It is located at 706 S. Goodwin Ave. in Urbana, just between Espresso Royale and The Canopy Club.

Breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner are available within their specified times and days of the week. Brunch is only offered on Sundays from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

College students: it’s not as expensive as you think.

I previously lived in Urbana and I walked past the restaurant often, thinking it was way beyond my budget, but I recently decided to give it a try. It was more pricey compared to my usual food outings, but for the right reasons.

The Bread Company is ideal for dates, family outings or even groups of friends who are in search of comfort food. The prices are higher than your typical fast-food restaurant or franchise, but the food is worth the extra couple of bucks.

It was expensive compared to my weekly treat-myself excursions at places like Noodles & Company and Potbelly’s, so I could not afford to eat there weekly. But it’s perfect for a special occasion.

When I visited for dinner, I ordered the Classic Bolognese Fettuccine for $14 and I brought a heaping pile home for later. The dish was shareable, but my friend and I wanted to go all-out. I would recommend this dish for traditional pasta lovers.

But before we got started on the main course, we indulged in the restaurant’s Classic Cheese Fondue. It was my first fondue experience … and it was life-changing. Roasted potatoes and bread were served with the cheesy concoction, which was a mix of imported gruyere and Emmentaler cheeses, dry white wine, garlic, salt and pepper.

The fondue prices range from $15-$34, but remember, they are meant to feed more than one person and different sizes are offered. If you spend money on an appetizer — a side soup or salad or a fondue — sharing an entree is a good idea.

Pizzas, pasta, salads and meat-based entrees are offered during dinner, which is available Sunday through Thursday, 5-10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday, 5-11 p.m.

Expect to spend $16-$25 on dinner.

The best bang for your buck during dinner hours is any pizza, with a shared fondue or side salad. The pasta dishes are super delicious, but they will cost you more.

During lunch hours, The Bread Company offers a variety of cold and grilled sandwiches, salads and soups, ranging from $3.50-$9.49. These options are much more affordable for college students. Prices are similar to those from places such as Subway and Jimmy John’s, but there are many more unique options for toppings.

Lunch is available Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Expect to spend around $7-$11.

My favorite lunch option is easily the grilled chicken sandwich with brie, tomatoes, onions, pickles and bacon chipotle aioli, but the veggie sandwich with pesto, roasted bell peppers, mixed greens, tomato, red onion and goat cheese comes as a close second. Each of these sandwiches can be paired with a side salad for $8.85.

During breakfast hours, which are Monday through Saturday, 8-11 a.m., a variety of grab and go sandwiches, full sandwiches and omelets are offered. Ingredients available include egg, bacon, ham, spinach, mushroom, tomato and cheese. The full sandwich and omelet are served with potatoes. Prices range from $3.50-$6.85; don’t expect to spend much more.

Brunch is served on Sundays from 10 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. Omelets, quiches, eggs, crepes, french toast and more are on the menu. Expect to spend around $10-$18.

If you visit The Bread Company, you should expect to spend less during breakfast and lunch hours and slightly more for brunch and dinner.
